Description

The Highway Tractor is the front end of many different types of support equipment. The highway tractor can be combined with a trailer to become a transporter, or perhaps it’s configured with a lube module or fuel tank to become a service station on wheels. Before you can operate the highway tractor you will need to be adequately trained and have the knowledge to operate safely and productively. Successfully completing this program will assist you to become a qualified highway tractor operator.

You will introduce the trainee to the basic skill of operating a commercial highway truck used in off-road construction or mine site applications. The program is not designed to be an over-the-road commercial driving course; nevertheless, the fundamentals of basic truck operation are applicable to most scenarios and the course could easily be used as an effective primer for on-road truck operation.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify and understand highway truck features, functions and major components
  • Understand key safety topics related to pre-use inspection and start up and shut down
  • Understand the steps for safe, efficient and productive operation of the highway truck

 

Course Content

Lesson 1: Pre-use Inspection

  • Identify the major components found on the highway tractor.
  • Explain the checks to perform for each of the major components.

 

Lesson 2: Controls

• Identify the location and explain the purpose of all the buttons and toggle switches found inside the operator’s cab.

 

Lesson 3: Start Up

• Explain the checks to perform before starting the engine.

  • Identify the sequence to follow when starting the engine during warm weather and the slightly different start-up sequence for cold weather. Be able to conduct a proper pre-use inspection of the machine

• Explain the system checks and air brake test to perform once the engine is running

 

Lesson 4: Truck Operation

• Discuss proper up and down shifting

• Examine the best ways to control travel speeds using the service pedal and engine brake

 

Lesson 5: Operating Tasks

• Learn the different components that make up the truck’s air brake system

• Examine the inner workings of the air brake system

• Describe how to perform brake adjustment checks

 

Lesson 6: Shut Down

• Identify safe locations to park the truck when not in use.

• Explain the steps for engine cool down.

 

Final Exam – 25 question exam with incorrect response feedback
