Description

Underground Mining Methods and Equipment is intended as both a course and a technical reference for an audience of engineers, operators, contractors, consultants, regulators, practising geoscientists and students in the mining sector.

The course provides a comprehensive introduction and reference for those who require a solid grounding in selection, design and development of mining methods and equipment. Mining method selection is based upon physical, geological, economical and environmental conditions and constraints. Equipment selection is based upon mining method and related production, performance and cost requirements. Principal course topics include the following.

  • Introductions to underground mining methods, equipment and basic requirements.
  • Mining methods and their application for room and pillar, sublevel stoping, shrinkage stoping, vertical retreat, cut and fill, longwall mining, sublevel caving, block caving, square set mining and other methods.
  • Layout and design of underground mine development and equipment requirements.
  • Equipment and selection for drilling, drifting, production, raising, shaft sinking, loading and hauling.
  • Development and production estimation and costing (note - all costing and estimation information within the course were upgraded to current industry values as of 2012).

This is a premium course which has been peer-reviewed by a committee appointed by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME).

Objectives

Course Content

This course consists of 22 viewing sessions of 30-60 minutes each plus supporting figures, images and design tables, interactive course reviews and extensive reference material. Course duration is equivalent to approximately 20 hours of study.

The course is integrated with several interactive mining tools including:

  • a mining method selection tool based on orebody characteristics; and
  • a decision support system tool for mine planning and design.

Learning Outcomes

  • Evaluate underground mining methods in the context of variable orebody conditions.
  • Apply this knowledge to the underground mine design and mine planning processes.
  • Perform selection and cost estimation of equipment for different underground mining methods.

Recommended Background

  • A partial degree or diploma in mining engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience of underground mining operations.

Certificate

By completing/passing this course, you will attain the certificate Edumine Certification

Overall, I was very disappointed in the quality of content. To begin with, the majority of the images were either illegible (poor scanning) or far too small to see any detail. Because of this, it was often difficult to follow along with the text. With a very simple google search, I found excellent high quality videos from the likes of Atlas Copco. With a small amount of effort, these videos could have been embedded. Every link presented in the material was either broken or the content had been removed from the website. I have been in the mining industry for ~15 years and so could generally follow along. Some of it was useful but a lot of it was dated (references to Inco). There should be a caveat with ANY costing that was presented because there is no doubt that it is completely out of date. The material presented like someone copied bullets from a slide presentation that was given at some point in their career. This is a $600 CDN course, nearly the same price as a university course tuition fee but the quality is far from similar. I strongly caution anyone interested in learning more about underground mining methods from taking this course. There are a lot of interesting courses on Edumine but this experience has left me with such a sour taste I'm not sure if I will consider another or recommend to a colleague.
