Since the industrial revolution, workers' health and safety have become important labour issues. With the advent of corporate governance and the "Duty of Care" principle—a legal obligation where rather than having the company being responsible, the responsibility has shifted to individuals—it became necessary to manage risk proactively. Despite this, hundreds of people are killed each year in accidents at work and at the same time millions of people are injured and maimed. In addition millions more suffer illnesses caused by, or made worse by, their work. Preventing accidents and ill health caused by work should be a key priority for everyone at work. This course provides basic information and risk management tools that can be used by individuals to look after their own well-being at work, or to use as they build a risk management program that will enable the proactive prevention of unwanted events in their workplaces. This course consists of the following five parts. Introduction and Terminology Hazards in Perspective Situational Awareness Risk Techniques and Controls Job Safety Analysis This training course was developed to help individuals learn how to manage safety risks by explaining what they should or should not (often as important!) do, and by providing information to then be able to take informed and appropriate actions. This training is different from formal "classroom" training courses as it provides the individual with the opportunity to pace themselves and try out the newfound knowledge in their own workplace, while having the course material easily accessible as reference. Participating in health and safety training helps you to: ensure you are not injured or made ill by the work you do; develop a positive health and safety culture, where safe and healthy working becomes second nature to you; and find out how you could manage health and safety better.
