Geostatistics, Modeling and Analysis is a series of two courses that provides a practical application reference for students and practicing geoscientists concerned with 3D characterization of subsurface conditions. It provides the knowledge and background to allow useful application of geostatistics, integrated with 3D modeling and spatial analysis, in the furtherance of geoscientific objectives.

Application of geostatistics in the geosciences started in the mining sector but now has significant applications in the environmental, petroleum, and geotechnical sectors. Applications include evaluation of a mineral deposit or oil reservoir, assessment of subsurface contamination, or characterization of geotechnical conditions.

In practice, application of geostatistical theory requires an integrated toolbox of statistical, geostatistical, geological, spatial analysis, and visualization techniques. The Geostatistics, Modeling and Analysis courses focus on the integrated approach to apply geostatistics for subsurface characterization, from a description of the data structures required, through discussion of the concepts, theory, and application, to qualification of the end results with worked examples.

The courses emphasize the practical application of geostatistics and limit the presentation of geostatistical theory to the level required for a solid understanding of the techniques involved.

Geostatistics, Modeling and Analysis 2 - Applications and Uncertainty is the second course in the series (and assumes prior completion of the companion course, Geostatistics, Modeling and Analysis 1 - Data Structures and Theory). It introduces practical applications of geostatistics in the geosciences and explains the associated statistical uncertainty of the results. The course covers areas such as uncertainty and probability, visualization and spatial analysis, practical data management, and where possible this is explained through worked examples.

Course Content

This course consists of 19 viewing sessions of 30–45 minutes each with supporting figures, extensive worked examples, numerous full-color images of computer visualization, plus interactive course reviews. Total course duration is equivalent to approximately 16 hours of viewing content.

Learning Outcomes

  • Employ 3D geostatistics to sampling control, probability and risk analysis.
  • Employ geostatistical analysis and estimation to mineral deposit evaluation and environmental and geotechnical problems.
  • Evaluate the uncertainty associated with geostatistical estimation.

Recommended Background

  • A degree in geology, engineering geology, mining engineering, environmental engineering or related discipline.
  • A basic understanding of 3D geostatistical methods. This course assumes the reader has completed the companion course Geostatistics, Modeling and Analysis 1 – Data Structures and Theory.
