These impacts need to be quantified before undertaking the project and throughout the mining lifecycle to ensure regulatory compliance, project sustainability, and environmental protection. Common groundwater impacts associated with mining projects may include: aquifer drawdown and/or reduction in groundwater flow due to pumping from groundwater production wells and/or dewatering of open pit/underground workings;loss of groundwater discharge to surface water such as springs, lakes or streams (of particular significance during winter baseflow conditions) due to aquifer drawdown/dewatering related to mining activities;seepage and associated contaminant transport from mine waste units such as waste rock piles, heap leach piles, tailings storage facilities, backfilled and/or flooded pits/underground workings; andoff-site migration of contaminant plumes in groundwater aquifers (originating from mine waste units) and potential discharge of contaminants into the receiving surface water (springs, lakes or streams). The use of numerical groundwater models enables decision makers to study and evaluate potential impacts of large and complex mining projects. Sophisticated models and modelling platforms are, however, no guarantee of good modelling practice. The complexities of groundwater models used for impact assessment may even lead to misuse and/or misinterpretation. This series of two courses on groundwater modelling describes the broader concepts of groundwater modelling related to impact assessment for mining projects. Yet, these guidelines reflect generally accepted best practices in groundwater modelling and as such should be applicable to a wide range of groundwater modelling applications. This groundwater modeling series is based on the British Columbia Groundwater Modelling Guidelines which were commissioned by the British Columbia Ministry of Environment (BC MoE). This course has been modified and condensed to suit the format and (international) audience of an Edumine course. This Edumine course will introduce participants to the principles of mine haul road design, from road building material selection and characterisation, road-user (truck and traffic) requirements, through to performance benchmarking and evaluation as a basis for road maintenance management decision making. Off-site road transportation (access roads) to mining operations (public or private, semi-private) poses a series of unique challenges to people in charge of their Safety, Security and Hazard Management. This course draws information from a number of real life studies performed on this type of road by the authors, and presents them following the logic of a Safety, Security and Hazard Management Report that could be prepared for a mine access road going from fictional "Gate A" to "Mine B," crossing a variety of terrain and subject to an array of geo-environmental and human-made hazards. This course is generic enough to be relevant to various different situations and environments around the world. The course is divided into five steps, which correspond to those necessary to compile a Safety, Security and Hazard Management Report, namely: Step 1: Preliminary Data Gathering; Step 2: Generic Preliminary Inspection/Review of the Road; Step 3: Specific Aspects Linked to Mining Roads; Step 4: Hazard Identification Primer; and Step 5: Possible Mitigations. Steps 1 through 3 are combined in Part 1: Introduction and Preliminary Tasks. Step 4 is presented in Part 2: Hazard Identification Primer, and Step 5 is found in Part 3: Possible Mitigations. This course is about heap leaching: the design of heap leach pads; the mechanics of preparing the mined ore for placement on a pad; the construction processes involved in placing materials on pads for leaching; the operation of heap leach pads, including the application of fluids that liberate the metals in the ore; the physics and chemistry of the seepage of fluids through the ore; and the ultimate closure of the heap leach pad when mining ends.
