Objectives This course presents the principles and application of stereographic projections, illustrated by numerous interactive figures. The course is divided into three parts. Part 1 - Geological Structures introduces the concept of orientation of geological structures. Part 2 - Stereographic Projections demonstrates the principles of projecting the relative orientation of geological features onto a stereonet. Part 3 - Types of Failure shows the methodology of plotting, processing and interpretation of structural geology data for the purpose of stability analysis of rock slopes and underground excavations. Metals, Ore Deposits and Minerals is the first in a series of two courses on extractive metallurgy by the author, written for university students as well as practicing engineers and metallurgists. Extractive metallurgy deals with ores as raw material and metals as finished products. Metallurgy has been transformed into a modern science as a result of developments in chemistry and chemical engineering. This series of courses is an introduction to the subject based in part on a course offered by the American Chemical Society under the title Metallurgical Chemistry. The full series includes... Metals, Ore Deposits and Minerals Mineral Beneficiation Metals, Ore Deposits and Minerals covers an introduction to metallurgy, properties of metals and their structures in the context of the Periodic Table, commercial classification of metals and their uses, metal production and recycling, mineral occurrences and prospecting/mining of ores, properties of mineral and ores, and sources of minerals. Summary The catastrophic failure of the Brumadinho dam in January 2019 which killed approximately 270 people has sparked a global conversation around tailings management, resulting in global tailing review to set a new international standard. This course will review the concepts of what responsible tailings management is as it pertains to the mining life cycle. The course will use examples from around the world to emphasize current trends in best practices in tailings management embraced by leaders in the industry.  Duration:     9 Hours Access:       90 Days Price:           $399 USD Category:    Geotechnics Who This Course is For This course is for mining company representatives responsible for tailings management, tailings designers, regulators involved in tailings issues, and anyone interested in the subject. Presenter  Kimberly Morrison Kimberly (Kim) Finke Morrison, P.E., R.G. Kim is the Senior Director, Global Tailings Management at Newmont’s corporate headquarters in Denver, Colorado. She is responsible for oversight of tailings and dams at Newmont’s global operations, including development of standards and guidelines, overseeing governance programs, conducting risk assessments and reviews, and leading implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). Summary Large volumes of data is often generated and captured in mining. However, it is uncommon for the value that this data contains to be fully uncovered and utilised to improve processes. The report “How digital innovation can improve mining productivity” by McKinsey & Company (2015) found that less than 1% of operational data obtained by mining companies is appropriately used. This webinar will enable participants to apply theoretical knowledge of statistics to resolve applied mining problems.  Participants will gain an understanding of what data to collect, how to measure it, and with what frequency? The data cleansing, validation, exploration, visualisation and integration phases will also be presented. In doing so, participants will be exposed to excel spreadsheets in order to appropriately find patterns, gain insights and communicate results. A number of case studies will be presented which demonstrate how data driven decision making can be unitised to improve mining processes. This course requires participants to undertake numerous calculation based exercises to effectively demonstrate the impact of each of the key levers that will be addressed. All participants will be provided with template/pre-filled excel spreadsheets to minimize time spent on data entry. Good use of excel is therefore required. Duration:     5 Hours Access:       90 Days Price:           $399 USD Category:    Mining Who This Course is For This course is designed for participants with mining industry exposure that are genuinely interested in using data to find patterns and gain insights into how these can potentially improve mining processes. It is also recommended for mining professionals who want to refresh their knowledge on data analytics. This may include but not limited to the following: Mine planners/schedulers: To make better assumptions relating to future productivity, machine and operator performance. Maintenance planners: Useful for understanding trends in machine failure and downtime data. Environmental personal: Making sense and correlating sample data, dust monitoring information, vibration data, and other environment monitoring data. Health and Safety representatives: Understanding trends in health and safety reporting of incidents and near-misses. Process plant operators/engineers: May assist in understanding process bottlenecks. This course is the second in a comprehensive series of five mine ventilation courses by the author, written for practicing professionals. The complete series includes the following titles ... Mine Ventilation 1 - Introduction Mine Ventilation 2 - Hazard Awareness Mine Ventilation 3 - Design Basics Mine Ventilation 4 - Advanced Design Mine Ventilation 5 - Operations The basic focus for this course series is on airflow engineering. This is because getting the right amount of fresh air to the workplace is the single most important success factor in meeting the quality and quantity requirements of an efficient, safe and healthy underground mining operation. The courses are also designed to ensure the ventilation practitioner has an adequate understanding of at least the basic issues involved in mine ventilation, and therefore knows when a ventilation problem is of such magnitude as to need to call in a specialist, and has sufficient background to be able to liaise technically with that specialist. Mine Ventilation 2 - Hazard Awareness ensures that you, as ventilation officer, are aware of toxic substances in the underground environment, are familiar with the toxic and other effects of each as well as the available methods of testing and monitoring. This course also ensures that you understand the principles of mine fires and explosions as well as your duties, and the response of other officials and the workers, in the event of a fire or other emergency. Major topics covered include... Gases, Dust, Radiation and Biological Hazards Gas, Dust and Fume Surveys and Monitoring Mine Fires, Explosions and Emergencies Escape, Entrapment and Refuge Authors Rick Brake   Duration: 16 Hours Access: 90 Days Category: Mining Level: Specialize Version Date: May 7, 2009 Read more
